There are websites and then there are websites, sure it’s great to have a standout website that has that wow effect to your viewer when they see it, but does that mean the viewer is taking the next step towards becoming a customer?
A great website is more than just looking good, it has to convey the right message and also guide the viewer to take that next step. What is the next step? Well the most obvious is to make a purchase on the website, or perhaps sign up for a free trial of a product, or even just to make contact with the website owner, whatever that next step may be, it has to be planned at the time of designing a new website. By planning this process a business then has a clear direction for what results to expect from the website.
Too many times businesses will just through information on a website and hope that something sticks for the viewers, in sales that is known as spit-balling and is rarely successful. So why take the chance on a business website?
A website is an extension of your business and therefore a direct reflection of how a business conducts and presents to its potential and existing customer base. Take for example that a business spends thousands of dollars to renovate a shop front, but then leaves the website untouched. It makes sense to many to do some regular renovation to the business website also, but so often it is forgotten and left with outdated content and a dated design that shows to the viewers.
Let’s say that a potential customers first impression of a business was purely based on arriving to the businesses website, what does that website say about the business? It is positive or is it showcasing an outdated view of the business?
In many cases if a potential customer calls and mentions that they were guided to call by the website it is because the intention of the website was to have the viewer make contact. In the case of a website that is not easy to navigate that may also cause a viewer to call or make contact, but that is typically to complain that the website was too hard to use and the message on the website was not clear.
So take the time before starting on a new website to work out what your message is and make sure it is a clear message for viewers, it should guide your viewers to take that next step.
Design a website that performs for your business and is not just there because everyone else has a website, take the time and have a website that is truly an asset for your business. Take the time at the beginning of the project to have a clear outcome for the results of the website and you will generally find that your website will perform as intended.
